birds as friends. About Elster, the robin and the great tit

I'm a city man through and through, and I've found for me that I therefore like flirting. I'm doing after a long stay in the country or in the forest so that I am again longing for the city. I like the world of kiosks, bars, Trams and supermarkets. The proximity to trees, plants, meadows, streams and animals is not given, an internal connection to make, I usually do something. To put it in a nutshell: forest land and its effect on me (unfortunately) like museums where you find beautiful-but-old things that have to do with the presence of very little.

A clear exception is the birds. Since my youth I maintain a close relationship, for example, the blackbird (for me it is still "Meredith"). When I was a child at the open window sat and dreamed to myself, she sang from the top of the roofs of their slightly melancholy song. You seemed to adopt from that, what also made me a little sad the day that lay behind us. At the same time she longed for something that was just coming in: the night. My grandfather called the Blackbird, the "Songbird of the city". It is conceivable, but probably not feasible to describe my life as a series of silent "meetings" with the blackbird.

birds ... A few weeks ago a good friend sent me from Switzerland (Andrea, greetings welcome!) Three small book with three small titles: "The Robins", "The great tit" and "The Magpie". The booklet, just a little larger as include beer mats, short texts and small drawings, but the doors open to large worlds. When I finished reading it, I was not only enthusiastic, but also enriched: I got some new friends. The books are designed as "Adamic" (Walter Benjamin) call to descriptions of "entities". Small worlds are large at a time, simply by two people (Text: Wolter Bos; drawings: Johanne Hoek) to care lovingly for something that is not usually observed.

to Elster I already had a relationship that is described in the twentieth chapter of my book heart works. I already knew what happens to me when I the proud and bold movements and rasping noise of the two magpies - they are most often seen in pairs - in me "repeat": they combine ignorance with sovereignty, an almost impossible feat ... The Magpies are both shy and brutal, and in the colors of their appearance, they reveal that they unite contradictions: deep black and clear white relate to each other confused.

The robins I was not yet really met. Wolter Bos: "For a while the robin is sitting almost motionless (on a hanging branch of a beech JvdM.), Then suddenly it fly unerringly to the nearest shrub, from there to the ground. Nimble and agile, it passes through the vegetation in the recessed spaces. But always, it observed a movement break. So it is awake, but without haste and noise, according to his employment. " [...] While we are watching moves, also us alone. It is as if we had taken place in a quiet, soulful space '.

addition to this text there is a drawing by Johanna Hoek: a hanging branch with tender green, like in the spring of heaven - sitting on the branch (as decided, would have to say really) the robin, with space around it , which is experienced by a space, because the bird is so clear and tranquil as the "center" offers. No, the drawings are not illustrations to the text: they provide an exercise for the eyes. My advice to readers: you only sunk in the drawings, and only then read the text.

"The robins [...] makes for all the control and distance, not a cool idea. Although it lives in its own space, and it is self-sufficient. But unlike the Red-backed Shrike still shimmers with him a kind of internal investment in its environment through ". And: "The rich song of the robin takes a [...] with interior in a province where there is heavy and dark, but that is repealed again in light and brightness".

The author and Artist are modest. They are in the service of a cause, the cause of birds, namely, or rather the cause of the relationship between us and the birds. What she experienced - and thus also "conceivable" - make the close spiritual nature as a space.

What is philosophically a difficult topic to show: the importance of our fine feelings (I do not mean our emotions), their status and significance, in short, their "truth" to light gets in the simple but striking drawings and features a direct evidence. It does so fun to look at the drawings and read the lyrics. They make the world pretty much.

And the great tit? "A man who wants to acquire the ability to rapidly switch in the room, it must first take everything slow. [...] Above all, he must learn to let go of the recent movement in the form, the next currently have. This is achieved without the nervousness, if he is already inside the target. This is precisely the presence in the surrounding space, which is so characteristic of the great tit. These are all spiritual and psychic abilities kind that would be a man erĂ¼ben. The great tit, where they are ready. They flow from their membership of its kind. Yes, they are kind. "

The booklet can be ordered at wolterbos@zonnet.nl, it exists in Dutch and German.
